Sequences of high tones across word boundaries in Tswana

چکیده
The article analyses violations of the Obligatory Contour Principle (OCP) above word level in Tswana, a Southern Bantu language, by investigating realization adjacent lexical high tones across boundaries. results show that boundaries downstep (i.e. lowering second series tones) only takes place within phonological phrase. A phrase break blocks downstep, even when necessary tonal configuration is met. phrase-based account adopted order to for occurrence downstep. Our study confirms pattern previously reported closely related language Sotho and provides controlled, empirical data from based on read speech twelve speakers which has been analysed auditorily two annotators as well acoustically.

Downstep in Tswana (Southern Bantu)
The article investigates the realization of adjacent high tones across word boundaries in Tswana, a Southern Bantu language. The results show that downstep, a lowering of the second in a series of adjacent high tones, takes place across word boundaries within the same phonological phrase. Downstep does not occur across phonological phrase boundaries. The study confirms an empirical phenomenon a...
متن کاملWord-level prosody in Sotho-Tswana
We introduce an algorithm to derive word-level tone assignments for the Sotho-Tswana languages. Prerequisite inputs are identified, and the steps to transform these inputs to tone assignments for each syllable are described. Manual implementation of the algorithm shows very good agreement with tone levels measured in a small Sotho-Tswana corpus.
متن کاملEffects of VV-sequence deletion across word boundaries in Spanish
Spanish does not allow vowel deletion in unstressed syllables the way languages like English do. However, it may occur in contexts of VV-sequences across word boundaries, under durational reduction in connected speech. This paper explores the effects of vowel deletion on the perception of [-high] vowel sequences on 8 native speakers of Peninsular Spanish. The results are then compared to the sp...
متن کاملBoundaries of perception of long tones in taiwanese speech
In this work we set out to investigate the fundamental frequency boundaries of perception of the Taiwanese long tones. We are interested in how the variations in fundamental frequency affect the perception of linguistic tones in Taiwanese speech. Our investigation is adopted from similar studies of tones in Mandarin speech. As opposed to Mandarin tones that can be perceived with little difficul...
متن کاملThe Status of the Rhythm Rule within and across Word Boundaries in German
German as well as other languages show a preference for rhythmical alternation, a phenomenon mostly discussed as the Rhythm Rule. This rule has mainly been explored on the word level, although it can also occur on a phrasal level. This study shows that it operates regularly on both levels. In contrast to its assumed appearance in English, the RR exists not only on the perceptual level but is al...
